Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Sandakan, depart to Sepilok

Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your accommodation in Sepilok, just a comfortable 30-minute drive away.

After check-in, take some time to freshen up and unwind. At 5:00 PM, depart for the Rainforest Discovery Centre, a renowned site for rainforest exploration and wildlife encounters.

At 6:00 PM, begin a captivating 2-hour guided night walk through the rainforest. This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to discover Sabah’s nocturnal wildlife, from night birds and insects to elusive creatures hidden within the forest canopy. Listen to the symphony of the jungle after dark and witness the rainforest come alive in a completely different way.

After the walk, return to your accommodation for a well-deserved dinner. Enjoy a peaceful evening at rest, preparing for the exciting adventures ahead.

Day 2Sepilok tour and depart to Deramakot Forest Reserve

After breakfast, check out from your accommodation and take a short 5-minute drive to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. From here, enjoy a leisurely 5-minute walk along the boardwalk to the nursery viewing area to witness the orangutan feeding session at 9:30 AM. Guests may observe from either a fan-cooled hall or an air-conditioned viewing room for added comfort.

Continue with another short walk to the outdoor feeding platform, where you may have the chance to see more orangutans in a natural forest setting.

Next, visit the adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, home to the world’s smallest bear. Learn about ongoing conservation efforts and observe rescued sun bears as they adapt to life back in the forest from two dedicated viewing platforms.

Enjoy lunch around noon before departing for Deramakot Forest Reserve. The journey takes approximately 4 hours along a rugged, uneven road, with brief stops along the way for vehicle registration at designated checkpoints.

Upon arrival, be welcomed with a refreshing drink before proceeding with check-in. Take some time to relax and settle into your surroundings.

Dinner will be served around 7:00 PM, followed by a guided 1-hour night walk around the vicinity, focusing on smaller nocturnal wildlife such as insects, amphibians, and other forest creatures. Later, embark on a 2-hour night drive safari in search of larger nocturnal animals. After the activity, return to your accommodation and rest for the night.

Day 3Deramakot Wildlife Safari, Overnight

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before heading out on a 2-hour morning drive safari through the pristine rainforest. This early excursion offers excellent opportunities to spot diurnal wildlife, including the iconic Bornean orangutan, Bornean gibbons, wild elephants, and a rich variety of bird species.

After the morning safari, return to your accommodation for some well-deserved rest. Enjoy lunch around noon, followed by free time to relax and soak in the natural surroundings of the forest reserve.

At approximately 3:30 PM, indulge in a light afternoon snack before setting off on an extended 5-hour drive safari. This immersive experience combines both an afternoon and night safari, increasing your chances of encountering diverse wildlife. As dusk approaches, pause to enjoy a packed dinner in the heart of the rainforest, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature.

After dinner, continue your night drive in search of elusive nocturnal animals. Once the safari concludes, return to your accommodation and unwind for the evening.

Day 4Depart to Kinabatangan River.

Enjoy your final morning with a 2-hour early morning drive through the misty rainforest—an excellent time for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for hornbills, eagles, and a wide variety of tropical bird species as the forest awakens.

Return to your accommodation for breakfast, then check out at 9:00 AM. Afterwards, begin your overland journey to the Kinabatangan River, a scenic drive of approximately 4 hours.

Upon arrival, take a short boat transfer to your riverside accommodation. Enjoy lunch upon arrival, followed by check-in and some time to relax.

At around 3:30 PM, enjoy a light afternoon snack before heading out on an afternoon river cruise safari along the Kinabatangan River—the longest river in Sabah and one of Borneo’s richest wildlife habitats. This is a great opportunity to spot proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, and other wildlife along the riverbanks.

After the cruise, return to your accommodation to freshen up. Dinner will be served at approximately 7:30 PM, and the rest of the evening is free at leisure.

Day 5Kinabatangan River, overnight

Begin your day with a light refreshment before setting out on a 1-hour morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River. As the rainforest comes to life, watch for birds in flight and monkeys leaping through the trees along the riverbanks, an ideal time for wildlife observation and photography.

Return to your accommodation for breakfast, followed by leisure time to relax. For those seeking a more active experience, an optional guided morning walk is available (payable on-site).

Enjoy lunch around noon, then take the afternoon to unwind until 3:30 PM. After a light snack, head out once again for an afternoon river cruise safari, offering another opportunity to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.

After the cruise, return to your accommodation to freshen up. Dinner will be served at approximately 7:30 PM, followed by free time at your leisure. You may also opt to join a guided night walk (payable on-site) for a closer look at the rainforest’s nocturnal life. Rest comfortably for the night, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.

Day 6Depart to Danum Valley Conservation Area

Enjoy breakfast before checking out and departing for Lahad Datu, a journey of approximately 2 hours along a rugged, uneven road.

Upon arrival, proceed to the Danum Valley Field Centre office for registration. From here, transfer to the centre’s in-house vehicle and continue on a further 2-hour drive through local townships and villages, gradually entering one of Borneo’s oldest rainforests.

Upon arrival at the field centre, attend a short briefing at the reception on your tour programme and accommodation. Afterwards, continue to your room for check-in, followed by lunch and some time to relax.

At around 3:30 PM, meet your guide for a guided jungle trek in search of wildlife. With a bit of luck, you may encounter animals even within the surrounding vicinity of the centre.

Return to your accommodation to freshen up before dinner, which is served from 7:30 PM. Later in the evening, embark on a 1.5-hour night drive safari in search of nocturnal wildlife. After the activity, return to your room and rest for the night.

Day 7Danum Valley Field Centre, overnight.

Enjoy breakfast before meeting your guide for a 2-hour jungle trek along forest trails in search of more wildlife sightings like the Orang Utan, Gibbons, Monkeys, birds and many others. Just before noon, return to your accommodation to freshen up and enjoy lunch.

At around 3:30 PM, set out once again on a guided trek to an ancient burial site. Here, you can observe traditional ironwood coffins believed to belong to the Sungai people, who once inhabited this area. Some of the coffins still display intricate carvings, alongside ceramic jars that offer a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage. After the visit, trek back to your accommodation and take time to relax.

Dinner will be served at approximately 7:30 PM. In the evening, join a 1-hour guided night walk around the vicinity, focusing on smaller nocturnal wildlife such as insects, amphibians, and other forest creatures. Afterwards, return to your room and rest for the night.

Day 8Departure to Lahad Datu airport

Enjoy a relaxed morning at your own pace, followed by breakfast at the lodge. Afterward, proceed with check-out.

At around 9:00 AM, depart for Lahad Datu town or airport. The transfer takes approximately 2 hours, with an estimated arrival time of around 11:00 AM.
